O'Callaghan Hotel & Conferencing Centre, Cambridge
This new hotel in Cambridge consists of a new eight storey concrete frame building over a triple basement. Construction is due to commence on site in January 2008.
Due to the high water-table levels on this site and as the 12m deep basement will be constructed in London Clay, a secant piled wall is proposed to be constructed around the perimeter of the new basement. Compressible cordek boards 225mm deep will be provided beneath the basement slab to accommodate ground heave. As a part of the client’s brief, we are required to provide a 14m wide open plan conference room in the basement and a post tensioned transfer slab is proposed to span the width of this room and support the weight of the eight storey structure above.
The Structure above basement level will consist of in-situ RC columns and walls and post tensioned concrete flat slabs. The cladding will consist of render and hand-set Portland stone which will be fixed back to a lightweight Metsec frame.
